How do you harvest vegetable garden seeds?
Friday, May 25th, 2007Fish varieties that can be put in a water garden?
Friday, May 25th, 2007Someone out there has got to know and have more experience with this than I do. I’ve looked all over the net and keep coming up with the same answer. Yeah, I know, Koi. We’re kind of bored with the same old look though. We’d like to know what fish we can add to our fish/garden pond. Fish that can live outdoors and with Koi. Fish with color. Not plane old pond fish. Something with yellow would be great. Please Help!

Do I need to kill the grass before tilling the soil for my garden?
Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007What are the advantages/disadvantages of doing such a thing? I’m starting late in the season (I just had a baby and this is my first real garden). Any other tips and/or suggestions for a first time gardener or for someone starting a garden this late are welcome and appreciated! BTW I’m in zone 7a. Thanks!

Do you work in your garden barefoot?
Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007It rains often where I live and I also have heavy clay soil. Wearing shoes or boots in the wet garden means tons of soil sticks to them and also causes soil compaction. However, walking barefoot in the garden does not cause this if the soil is not totally saturated.
I have found that working in the garden barefoot has made me a better gardener in that I can tend to weeding and harvesting quicker after it rains. To wear shoes, typically we must wait 2 to 3 days before entering the garden to accomplish anything, so weeds tend to grow out of control and produce gets overly mature.
There are still some tasks that cannot be done, for example, beans should never be touched when the plants are wet — that is an old wives tale that is true. But, basically, barefoot gardening is a good thing. If you have never tried it, I recommend it some time.

I want to build a garden in the backyard - where do I start?
Wednesday, May 16th, 2007My mom is ill and I want her to have a nice place she can go and sit outside in her backyard - I want to make her a garden with a fountain - but where do I start?? What resources are there to making your own garden - I also thought about putting in a pond… (also there are only rocks in the backyard now)
thanks!!
what is the exposure of your back yard? We have 1 large tree over the area I would put her space - it is in the corner of the yard with a wooden fence on each side.
do you have any shade trees? one
and what climate zone do you live in? We are in Northern California
Does your mom enjoy gardening, or is this just to be a place for her to sit and enjoy? Since she is disabled and she has never done gardening - this will just be a pretty place she can sit outside and enjoy.
I hope this helps more!
Thanks!!
oh - and they are small gray gravel rocks

Thursday, May 10th, 2007What is the best way to charge solar powered garden lanterns quickly?
Tuesday, May 8th, 2007I have a set of solar powered garden lanterns I need to use for a play. The man at the store said to leave them in full sun (I’m in England, so that’s never going to happen!) for three days before turning them on. However, I need them before that for rehearsals. Is there a way to quickly and artificially charge solar cells? What sort of artificial light works/works best in charging solar cells?
